Objectives: Manage the production, update, and enhancement of architectural plans via CAD to match homebuyer market demand, city/county requirements, and MSH specifications.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Manage the Drafting team.
  • Based on sales contract structural option selections, prepare plans for Homebuyer review and approval.
  • Ensures plans are coordinated with structural calculations, and that structural drawings are sealed and signed.
  • Involved in the development and selection of new plans and elevations.
  • Coordinates with the Drafting team to create and maintain base plans that streamline the drafting process and effectively show all standard structural options.  Create Master sets of drawings in CAD.
  • Updates base plans to reflect custom features and specification changes, with an emphasis on value engineering and cost variance reduction. 
  • Interpret and implement building code changes.
  • Communicate plan adjustments to the Estimating, Purchasing, Production, Sales, and Design Center Departments.
  • Assist the Estimating Department with specific materials, trims, fixtures, and construction assemblies (floor joists, floor sheathing, roof deck layouts, electrical layouts, etc.). 
  • Assists with the production of floor plans for sales brochures and websites.
  • Facilitates distribution of plans to appropriate entities for plat engineering, truss engineering, and special engineering as needed.
  • Facilitates the creation of building permit packages with the Construction Coordinator(s).
  • Conducts framing walks on-site to review new plans and value engineer structure.

Architectural Product Development

  • Recommend and develop new architectural products, including updates to existing plans and elevations and development of new single-family detached and attached homes.
  • Manage relationships and coordinate with outside architects and engineers involved in new product development, including 2 over 2 townhomes and commercial building development.
  • Report on plan development progress to the Executive Team and New Community Team.

Employee Training & Development

  • Schedule periodic (quarterly minimum) training sessions for Building Code, CAD drafting, or Building Construction methods.
  • Schedule periodic (Monthly minimum) training sessions for Draftspersons to work side by side with the Drafting Manager and/or other experienced team members. The goal is to help them gain experience through direct contact with experienced team members.

Education/Skills Required:

  • Strong team leadership skills.
  • Ability to read plans and blueprints.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD, Excel & Adobe Acrobat Software.
  • Ability to interpret scale/spatial relationships.
  • Ability to understand structures, framing details & calculate design loads.
  • Ability to understand the cost relationship of plan changes & structural items.
  • Prior experience in new home construction.

Work Environment: This position will work primarily in an office environment but may also need to visit community sites and attend meetings in the communities.
